Homemade Hamburger Buns!

Wednesday night I went to an awesome potluck, slip-n-slide, and BBQ. It was hot out, and the slide was slippery, and the hamburger bun on my burger? Was homemade. It was absolutely delicious!
My friends mother is a baker, you can check out her website here.

So this morning, when my mother announced that we would be having hamburgers tonight, I jumped at the chance to try making some beautiful buns for myself. They weren’t quite as good as hers of course. πŸ˜‰ But absolutely delicious!

Here are the ingredients:
1 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1 tbsp honey
1/4 cup butter
1 egg
4 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
2 1/4 tsp yeast

Homemade Plum Jam

My favorite movie, or maybe it’s in my top three, along side, Pride and Prejudice, and The Cutting Edge, is Sweet Home Alabama. I’ve seen that movie more times than I can count, and every time it just gets better. One of my favorite scenes is when Reese Witherspoon is making jam with her mother. (Don’t worry if you haven’t seen it, I didn’t give anything away). πŸ™‚ Of course she’s making peach jam, but hey plums are just as good in jam. So that’s what we’re going to make today.
My brothers girlfriend Michelle, offered to show me how! Here’s what you need:

5 lb plums
3-1/2 cup sugar
Jam making equipment
Between 6-7 12 oz canning jars

Start by cutting and pitting your plums, we had a whole bunch, freshly picked! πŸ™‚

Throw them in a big pot, and add your sugar.

20130829-080942.jpg

Stir so that all of the plums are coated with the sugar. Then let it rest for about 15 minutes.

20130829-081058.jpg

Bring to a rolling boil.

20130829-081146.jpg

Then drop it to a simmer, and let it simmer for 1 hour. Don’t forget to stir occasionally during this process, or it will burn. After an hour, you should have this!

No using a wide mouthed funnel, carefully spoon it into prepared jars, making sure to leave about half an inch of room at the top.

Carefully stir to remove bubbles.

Pour some water in a pot, and bring it to a simmer, place jar lids inside and allow then to heat. They will be very hot, be careful. * Note: it is not necessary to place the rim of the lid in pot as well, only the very top lid that will be used to seal the jar.

Remove seal carefully using a magnet. Place on jar, and screw the rim of the lid on tightly.

Now fill a huge pot with water, and bring it to a boil! Once it is steaming add your jar rack.

Carefully place the sealed jars inside, and allow them to steam for 10 minutes. This will create your lasting seal!

Pull the jars of jam out carefully! Don’t burn your self! And then they’re done. Leave them on the counter, and you’ll hear a popping sound when the top lid suctions in. πŸ™‚
The next step is easy… Pop open a jar, and enjoy for breakfast, on some toast, in a sandwich, or anytime of day… Yum!

Mmm mm good. I think I might just pop in Sweet Home Alabama and enjoy this rainy day with my fresh jam. πŸ™‚
